The Rise of the Rams (1973-80)

A Defensive Powerhouse That Ruled the NFC West

For most of the 1970s, the Los Angeles Rams were a constant presence in January football. From 1973 through 1980, they reached the postseason every year, built around one of the era’s most dominant defensive fronts and a physical, disciplined style of play.

Under Chuck Knox and later Ray Malavasi, the Rams combined a ferocious defensive front, a punishing running game, and organizational stability that allowed them to survive quarterback changes, rule shifts, and playoff heartbreak. They didn’t win a Super Bowl during this stretch — but they were never far away.
