The Decade That Forged John Elway’s Reputation
In the celebrated quarterback draft class of 1983, no one was more celebrated than John Elway. Blessed with a rifle arm and uncommon athleticism, and carrying enormous expectations, he survived some early growing pains and delivered. Elway turned the Denver Broncos into the AFC’s flagship franchise in the mid-to-late 1980s.
To understand the Hall of Fame career of John Elway, its necessary to split it into two distinct chapters. The first chapter was from 1983-92 under head coach Dan Reeves. Elway lifted rosters that were often flawed to the Super Bowl. While they fell short of the ultimate prize, these Bronco teams of Elway’s first ten years played and won memorable playoff games against Cleveland and others. It’s this decade that’s our focus in Elway’s Emergence.
