When Defense Ruled The Windy City
The Chicago Bears of the mid-1980s were impossible to ignore. From 1984 through 1991, they dominated the old NFC Central, terrorized opposing quarterbacks, and produced one of the most iconic Super Bowl teams in league history. Led by head coach Mike Ditka and fueled by a defense coordinated by Buddy Ryan, this era restored the Bears to the center of the NFL conversation.
At the heart of it all was defense. Mike Singletary patrolled the middle with surgical intensity. Richard Dent, Dan Hampton, and Steve McMichael collapsed pockets. Gary Fencik, Dave Duerson, and a young secondary turned pressure into turnovers. And in 1985, it all came together in a season that still stands as the modern-day gold standard for defensive football.
