April 30-May 6: The Week Ahead
This week marks the beginning of what will be a regular rhythm at TheSportsNotebook. With the NBA now joining the NHL in being underway in the pursuit of a championship, we’ll have daily reports in each sport. And to make sure we don’t let baseball slip under the radar, all six divisions will get a weekly check-in, from here through the conclusion of the NBA Finals in late June. So your daily fare here on Monday thru Saturday will be built around NHL and NBA playoff reports, plus one MLB division overview. Then on Sunday its NHL/NBA update with baseball taking a day off.
In addition to these basics are a few extras. We continue our regular NASCAR coverage with a preview of Sunday’s race at Talladega. The race for The Sprint Cup enters its second quarter this week, with the 10th race on the 36-event card. And TheSportsNotebook is excited to publish a special commentary from the suffering world of Minnesota sports. Isaac Huss, a Notebook contributor and diehard fan in the Twin Cities walks us through the horror it is right now to root for the Vikings, T-Wolves, Twins and Wild, on top of the University of Minnesota basketball and football team.
And most important, it’s Derby Week! TheSportsNotebook has chronicled the prep races throughout the thoroughbred racing season and now it’s time for the Run For The Roses at Churchill Downs on Saturday. We’ll preview every horse on the field in a Friday extravaganza and have you ready to enjoy the most thrilling two minutes in sports.
Finally, let’s come to TheSportsNotebook’s pride and joy, the Historical Museum where we’re working on building the treasures of the modern age of sports, from 1976 to the present. By the end of the week, there will be a new addition and it’s the celebration of 2001 in the state of Arizona, where the good people of the desert, cheered on the U of A basketball team to the NCAA final in spring and saw the Diamondbacks win the World Series in October. Take some time and take a look through the museum, as we have an article representing each year from 1976-2000 looking for similar storylines.
