MNF Preview: NY Giants-New Orleans
We’ve got a good Monday Night game tonight in the Bayou as the New York Giants head to New Orleans to face the Saints. If New Orleans wins, they move to 8-3, keep a one-game lead on Atlanta in the NFC South, stay on San Francisco’s heels for the #2 playoff seed and strengthen their position for simply qualifying for the playoffs. Should the Giants win, they stay tied with Dallas in the NFC East at 7-4 and you would have a wild mesh of 7-4 teams with the Giants/Cowboys in the East, Bears/Lions in the North and Saints/Falcons in the South, all fighting for position below Green Bay and San Francisco.
New York’s big problem this year is their customary strength of running the ball. The Giants rank last in the NFL in rush yardage, with Ahmad Bradshaw hurt and Brandon Jacobs looking like’s finally run out of gas. I think this adds way too much pressure on Eli Manning and gives the New Orleans defense the freedom to be aggressive. I look for 3-4 turnovers to be created and the Saints to be playing from a posture of aggressiveness most of the night.
On the other side of the ball, the Giants’ corners, Corey Webster and Aaron Ross will have their hands full matching up in the passing game with wideout Marques Colston. All the pressure’s going to be on ends Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora to generate pressure and force Drew Brees into mistakes. Brees’ one big flaw is that he usually is good for 1-2 picks if you can force him to throw a lot. The problem is, I don’t believe the Giants can get him in that spot tonight. Playing at home, with a raucous crowd, I’ll call this one decisively for the Saints at 35-17.
