NHL Playoffs: Brodeur Wakes Up The Echoes

I love Martin Brodeur. I know, if you read through the commentary on the NHL playoffs I’ve made more negative than positive comments about the New Jersey goaltender, but that’s not out of spite, just that the numbers say he’s far from the goalie he once was. But even as a Boston fan he’s a goalie I root for and I absolutely love a night like Monday when, in a must-win spot, he wakes up the echoes of his younger days, turns back 28 of 29 shots and helps his team beat the New York Rangers 4-1 and tie up the NHL’s Eastern Conference Finals at two games apiece.

AL East Report: Red Sox Rally Behind Unlikely Heroes

The Boston Red Sox are gaining steam in the American League East. The bottom dropped out 12 days ago and Josh Beckett was booed off the mound early, amid reports that he’d been golfing after being unable to pitch and then looking equally unable to pitch when he actually did take the mound against Cleveland. But after that game, the Sox won three in a row from the Indians, then took two from Seattle—including a shutout from Beckett. They split two with Tampa and finally won two of three in Philadelphia over the weekend, with the Sunday rubber match featuring Beckett outdueling Cliff Lee. The Sox are still in fifth place in the American League East and they’re still a game under .500. But they’re only one back of the New York Yankees for fourth in the Division Turned Upside Down and they’re doing with some unlikely heroes.

NHL Playoffs: Phoenix Lives To Play One More

The Phoenix Coyotes weren’t able to stop the shot barrage that the Los Angeles Kings have putting on this season, but they were able to mitigate it and redirect it, and that was enough for goalie Mike Smith to deliver the Coyotes a 2-0 win in Game 4 of the NHL’s Western Conference Finals and avoid a sweep.

Is The Spirit Of 1966 Sports Back For More?

Go back to the conclusion of the first weekend of the baseball season. The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox had each been swept and the ESPN ticker at the bottom of the TV screen was telling us this was the first time since 1966 that each team had started 0-3. About a day later, a friend of mine who’s an Orioles fan sent me a text pointing this out and then concluding with this little tidbit, phrased as a question—“And who was it that won the World Series in 1966?” The answer, as you may have guessed is the Baltimore Orioles.
